First edition of this abbreviated and chronologically organized history of France, from Pharamond, the first Merovingian king, up to Louis XV. The text is in verses to facilitate memorizing for the young reader. Extensive annotations give some more detailed background information. P.-A. One of 520 handnumbered copies of a private edition for subscribers. First complete and uncensored German edition prepared after various sources like Macnaughten's Calcutta edition of 1839-42, the Breslau edition by Maximilan Habicht (1825-43), the first Bulaq edition (Cairo, 1835), and of course Richard Burton's Benares edition of 1886-88. Because of the daring passages included here, the series was available through private subscription only. The title "L'innoncence" is from de Sauvigny's (c. 1730-1809) novel "Histoire amoureuse de Pierre-le-Long, et de sa très-honorée dame Blanche Bazu", first published in 1765. The present second edition should comprise this novel, as well as "La Rose", "La Cour d'amour", and "L'Isle d'Ouessant", our copy is made up of only two of these four works, and lacks the engraved pictorial title described by Cohen. It does include the 14 pages of music called-for. The book is dedicated to Madame la Comtesse de G(enlis) who wrote favourably about "Pierre-le-Long". - Light browning. - Cf. Five episodes from the Maha-Bharata: Ardschuna's Himmelsreise; Hidminba's Tod; Des Brahmanen Wehklage; Sundas und Upasundas; Nalas und Damjanti, presented in Sanskrit and in a German metric version, with copious annotations. The Sanskrit expert Franz Bopp (1791-1867) studied oriental languagues in Paris where he got to know Chézy, Silverstre de Sacy, and A. W. von Schlegel; after studies in London he came to Berlin, where he became a member of the "Akademie der Wissenschaften" and professor for oriental literature. The work is dedicated to the Prussian minister baron Heinrich Friedrich Carl von Stein. - Title and first few pages quite browned with waterstain in lower outer corner, rest relatively clean with occasional foxing. - Goedeke XVI, 614-15, 7, no. 3 and XVII, 189, 112; cf. Links der Brühl-, Taggen- und Wolfensberg, im Mittelgrund die Stadt Winterthur mit Oberwinterthur und Seen, im Hintergrund der Seerücken, dann die ganzen bewaldeten Hügel um das Tösstal bis Dättnau und Wartgut, im Hintergrund die Alpenkette und die Höhenzüge des Schwarzwaldes. George Buchanan's (1506-1582) famous metric translation of the book of psalms, edited, annotated by Nathan Chytraeus (or Kochhafe, 1543-1598). He was professor of Latin and poetry at Rostock, later in Bremen. His Buchanan edition was first published in Herborn in 1588; it saw several reissues during the 16th and 17th centuries. The book includes his "Collectanea", miscellaneous explanations to Buchanan's paraphrase, with a separate title. Inserted between the two is the "Carmina" by Marcantonio Flaminio (1498-1550) - Not in Paisey.

Erwiderung auf einen gehässigen Angriff "Beantwortung" eines Österreichers auf die "Erdaur und Erleuterung" der Erbeinigung von 1511. Diese wurde zwischen Kaiser Maximilian I. für sich und als Vormund Erzherzog Karls von Burgund und den Zwölf Orten samt Stadt und Stift St. Gallen und Appenzell getroffen zur Sicherung der Freigrafschaft Burgund. Sie umfasste Punkte wie die Zusicherung des freien Verkehrs und Handels, die Einstellung aller gegenseitigen feindlichen Angriffe etc. - Durchgehend etwas gebräunt. - Barth 2309; vgl. HBLS III, 51.

Early edition of Cassiodorus' collected works, edited by the Parisian scholar Guillaume Fournier (died 1584), first published in 1579. Cassiodorus, the 6th-century Roman historian, statesman and monk, was quaestor under king Theodoric, later ordinary consul of his native province of Bruttium in Calabria. After Theodoric's death, he became head of the civil services and, under Athalaric, was made prefect. He is the chief source for the life and reign of Theodoric. In addition to his works, the volume contains other historic tracts concerning the Ostrogothic empire: the "Edictum Theodorici", Ennodius' "Panegyricus Theodorici", and Jordanes' "De rebus Geticis". - Old library stamp on title, stitching somewhat loose. - Adams C-866; STC, (French), suppl. 22; cf. Walter Crane's (1845-1915) beautifully produced picture book celebrating spring. It was first published in 1889, this is possibly the 4th edition. The first illustration shows Queen Flora calling the flowers from their long sleep. The flowers appear in order of their flowering season, starting with Snowdrops and a Crocus, and ending with Chrysanthemums and the Christmas Rose. The present book is completely Crane's own work, including the verses; his art, influenced by Japanese woodcuts, the Preraffaelites and Art Nouveau, shows interesting paralleles to the anthropomorphous flowers of Ernst Kreidolf. - Fine copy. - Bilderwelt 2233 (ed. 1892, probably 3rd); Osborne I, p. 58; cf. One of several 16th-century Latin editions of the "Lives of the philosophers" by Diogenes Laertius, the third century historian and epicurean philosopher, edited here by the French humanist Jean Boulier (fl. 2nd half of the 16th cent.), of whom we know Cicero and Marital editions. - Lower inner hinges somewhat weak, inner front hinge reinforced with strip of printed paper, old ms. ownership entry on pastedown, somewhat browned, some red underlining on one page. - Ebert 6181; Not in Adams.

Schöne, gebundene Folge aller sechs von Disteli selbst veröffentlichten Kalender, und dem siebten Jahrgang von 1845, nach dem Tode Distelis erschienen und "war (bereits) moderat gehalten, weckte daher keine Entrüstungsstürme mehr" (H. Derendinger). Der vom Oltner Zeichner und Maler Martin Disteli (1802-1844) gemeinsam mit dem für die Textredaktion zuständigen Solothurner Politiker Peter Felber (1805-1872) als "Schweizerischer Bilderkalender" herausgegebene Kalender erlangte mit seinen scharfen, an der geschichtlichen Unterdrückung und den zeitgenössischen Politfehden orientierten Karikaturen eine solche Popularität, dass er die wirksamste Waffe der Freisinnigen gegen die aristokratisch-klerikalen Kräfte wurde. Die Gegnerschaft ging so weit, dass einzelne Jahrgänge verboten und konfisziert wurden, "ja es fanden sogar demonstrative öffentliche Verbrennungen statt" (H. Derendinger). Die in Lithographie ausgeführten Blätter (die Textabb. in Holzstich) betreffen auch markante Episoden aus der Schweizergeschichte.- Tlw. falsch num. od. verbunden, im 1. Reprint of the 1862 Furne edition with these congenial and very humorous illustrations by Gustave Doré. In his preface, Gautier writes that the Adventures of Baron Münchhausen enjoyed high popularity in Germany, and that he hopes they would soon enjoy such popularity in France despite their somewhat germanic flavour, or even indeed just for that reason. He judges: "C'est la logique de l'absurde poursuivie avec une outrance qui ne recule devant rien". This second work published by the Doves Press, in which the author presents his philosophy about book production, was printed by Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, who designed the font which is a faithful copy of the famous Latin type used by Nicolaus Jenson in Venice from 1470-78; compositor was J. H. Mason, pressman H. Gage-Cole. Béranger's chansons, his popular songs of love, abandon, drunkenness and joy, and his famous political satires, in a beautiful edition illustrated with wood-engravings after Grandville and Raffet (20 of 120). The illustrations are present in their second state; they were first published in 1836. In the 1839 edition, an extra set of the designs, engraved on steel, is usually bound whith the three volumes which is not present here. David Hess (1770-1843) wurde gegen seinen Willen zur militärischen Laufbahn bestimmt; er versuchte, sich das Leben als Offizier der Schweizer Garde mit Dichtung und Musik erträglicher zu machen. 1796 aus dem Dienst entlassen, widmete er sich ausschliesslich seinen künstlerischen Neigungen. Die vorliegende Sammlung enthält Gedichte, Reiseaufzeichnungen und kleine Prosastücke, wie z.B. "Die bezauberte Prinzessin, oder die Entstehung des Teufelskellers bey Baaden im Aargau". The order was established in 1800 by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon (1751-1825), King of Naples and (III of) Sicily, reigned from 1759-1806, continued in Sicily until 1815, where he was restored in Naples as well. He merged the thrones of Sicily and Naples to the throne of Two Sicilies. The Order of Saint Ferdinand and of Merit was founded by him for those, who had rendered extraordinary services to the Royal Family. In 1810, the statutes were reformed. The order is divided into three classes: "Cavalieri di Gran Croce", "Cavalieri Commendatori", and "Cavalieri". The present manuscript in brown ink has delicate ink drawings of the orders, medals and ribbons, painted in watercolors. - Some small smudging to covers, various small defects to paper.

Erstausgabe der anonym und ohne Wissen Lavaters (1741-1801) von dessen Freund Georg Joachim Zollikofer herausgegebenen Tagebuchaufzeichnungen. Lavater hatte für seine Freunde verschiedene umgearbeitete Stücke aus seinem Tagebuch von 1768 zusammengestellt. Einer dieser Freunde veränderte nun die äusseren Daten soweit, dass der Verfasser nicht gleich zu erkennen war und sandte das Manuskript an den in Leipzig lebenden Zürcher Theologen und Aufklärer Zollikofer (1730-1788), welcher in der Meinung, es bestünde ein Bedürfnis nach solchem Lesestoff, diesen "Beitrag zur Geschichte des menschlichen Herzens" veröffentlichte. Das Werk wurde denn auch mit Begeisterung aufgenommen, so dass Lavater sich im zweiten, nun offiziell von Zollikofer herausgebenen Band zur Verfasserschaft bekannte. Die unsignierten, vermutlich aber von Christian Gottlieb Geyser gestochenen Vignetten illustrieren das häusliche Leben der Zeit. Malherbe was court poet, convinced of his own grandeur "ce qu Malherbe écrit dure éternellement". Dedicated to purity of language and to form, and less concerned with feelings, he was rejected by the romantic poets and only rediscovered in the 20th century by intellectuals like Paul Valéry and Francis Ponge. David Nerreter (1649-1726), pastor and poeta laureatus, as "Philemon" member of the "Pegnesischer Blumenorden", wrote a number of works on world religions, like his "Mahometanische Moschea" or the "Wunderwürdige Juden- und Heiden Tempel" based on the work of Alexander Ross. The present title follows Ross's often epublished "Pansebeia, or a View of all Religions in the World" (1658), of which a German edition was published by Endter in 1674. The engraved plates show Jesus, apostles, prophets, Pope Clemens XI, and barefoot sinners in the ridiculing clothes they had to wear by the inquisition. - Jöcher III, 865; Kosch XI, 128. First separate edition of Jamblichus' (born c. 280 A.D.) biography of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras (6th century B.C.), Greek and Latin parallel edition. The Latin translation is by the Strasburg historiographer and iurist Ulrich Obrecht (1646-1701), edited here with annotations by Ludolf Küster (1670-1716). Jamblichus' work is followed by a two further biographies of Pythagoras, one by the Greek teacher and philosopher Porphyrios (233 - c. 301 A.D.), and an anonymous one transmitted in Photios', "Bibliotheca". The calligraphy, book design, and illumination was executed by the well-known English illuminator and miniature painter Alberto Sangorski (1862-1932), who specialized in illustrating religious text. The reproductions are by the Graphic Engraving Company. The introduction by Mrs. R.L. Stevenson is printed in red. The prayers are in black with red initials, each starting with a large illuminated initial. Stevenson (1850-1894) lived in Vailima, West Samoa, where the whole household joined each evening for a prayer session. -Sumptuous production, fine.

The last of four 18th-century editions of the "Satyre Menipée", first published in 1593, borrowing its title from the Greek satyrical author Menippos (c. 280 A.D.). The collective work of Jean Le Roy, Jacques Gillot, Florent Chréstien, Nicolas Rapin, Pierre Pithou, and Jean Passerat was aimed at the Catholic "Ligue" and in defense of the Huguenot movement, advocating tolerance and religious peace. The main subject of the book is the satyrical description of the "Etats de la Ligue", the assembly of the members of the French Catholic league. When the pamphlet was written, the "Ligue" was already defeated, and King Henry IV, though converted to Catholicism, was in a peaceful agreement with the Protestants. Nevertheless, in the text all parties found in some way a mirror of their own sentiments, and thus the book was widely read, often enlarged and annotated. The annotations here are by P. Du Puy, Jacob le Duchat, Prosper Marchand, and J. Godefroy. The fictitious impressum "Ratisbonne, Kerner" has been used (according to Barbier) since the 1664 edition printed by Elzevier in Amsterdam, and stood later for other places and printers like Amsterdam, Desbordes (ed. of 1696) or Bruxelles, Foppens (ed. of 1726 and the present ed.). The plates in our copy seem not to correspond entirely with the ones described by Cohen/de Ricci, Sander, or Lewine. Among the plates present are the two depictions of the procession and the assembly of the "Ligue", and the portraits of Barnabe Brisson, Charles de Lorraine, and Seigneur Agnoste. - Ms. notes on first flyleaf of vol. Erstausgabe. Wichtiges Quellenwerk für die Geschichte der Burgunderkriege des Berner Stadtschreibers und Historikers Diebold Schilling, der 1485 kurz nach der Vollendung seiner grossen Berner Stadtchronik starb. Mit der hier vorliegenden "Beschreibung" wurde der dritte Band von Schillings Manuskript, das seine Witwe nach dem Tod ihres Mannes nach Zürich verkaufte, auf Anregung von Johann Jakob Bodmer zum ersten Mal im Druck vorgelegt. Shaw's ( 1856-1950) play was first produced at the Garrick Theatre in New York in 1922, the first English performance was given in Birmingham in 1923. "Back to Methuselah" consists of five parts, in fact individual dramas, entitled: At the Beginning: B.C. 4004; The Gospel of the Brothers Barnabas: Present Day; The Thing Happens, A.D. 2170; Tragedy of an Elderly Gentleman: A.D. 3000; and As Far as Thought Can Reach: A.D. 31920. The cycle is considered Shaw's main philosophical work, interpreting the history of mankind from the Garden of Eden to the present, with visions of things to come in the far future. First edition. Lavishly produced work on the iconography of Greek and Roman gods, heroes, and favorites of gods and their most typical situation or action. In his preface, the author maintains that he takes second role to the engraver, his merits are only based on such worthy precursors as Le Clerc, Fourmont, Banier and others. Franz Xaver Stöber (1795-1858) from a Viennese family of engravers, taught at the Academy in Vienna and was the first to use the technique of steel engraving in Austria. Tissot's (1728-1797) "Avis au peuple sur sa santé" (Lausanne 1761) which gained him fame and which was translated into thirteen European languages. The present German edition was translated by the Zurich physician Johann Caspar Hirzel (1725-1803). Mit der vorliegenden Fortsetzung von Hans Heinrich Bluntschlis erstmals 1704 erschienenen "Memorabilia Tigurina" erwarb sich Friedrich Vogel (1804-1855) die grössten Verdienste um die Lokalgeschichte der Stadt. Er beschreibt die unruhigen Jahre von 1819 bis 1840 in alphabetisch geordneten Artikeln und bietet eine Fülle historischen und statistischen Materials. Erstausgabe dieser Geschichte Appenzells, die ursprünglich aus Schulbuch geplant war, später zu einem Volksbuch verarbeitet wurde. Der Verfasser, Johann Konrad Zellweger (1801-1883) aus Trogen, wurde in Hofwil zum Erzieher ausgebildet, war dann Lehrer und Waisenvater in Trogen und Seminarleiter in Gais, bevor er eine eigene Erziehungsanstalt gründete. Zimmermann (1728-1795), town physician at Brugg (Aargau) since 1745, was later appointed personal physician to King George III of England at Hanover. He was famous all over Europe for his popular philosophical writings. His present work on medical experience - first published in 1763 - is remarkable for being written in German; he took great care to find pertinent expressions for technical terms. The book lays down rational, scientific tenets of therapeutic practice, the value of experiments is stressed. The work was equally suitable for medical students, fellow physicians, and the educated bourgeoisie. It was very successful, three editions were published within fifteen years, and translations into French, English, and Italian were made.
